Matthijs Vermeulen

Matthijs Vermeulen ( born February 8, 1888 in Helmond, † July 26, 1967 in Laren, born as Van der Meulen ) was a Dutch composer and music journalist.

Life

Vermeulen was the eldest son of a blacksmith. He became a pupil of Daniel de Lange and Alphons Diepenbrock. From 1909 to 1920 he worked as a music critic in Amsterdam, giving him - earned especially hostility, about that of the conductor Willem Mengelberg - only specialist appreciation. After 1918 his Schmähruf Long live Sousa! ( the audience understood partially Troelstra, the name of a socialist revolutionary, and feared the revolution ) in the performance of the 7th Symphony by Cornelis Dopper by the Concertgebouw Orchestra turmoil had caused, Vermeulen was denied for future concerts, admission to the concert hall. This incident could also be a causal factor that Vermeulen's Symphony No. 2 of 1919/20, Prelude à la nouvelle journée ( Mengelberg called unplayable ) to wait until the 1950s to its world premiere had. Vermeulen moved abroad for many years ( until 1946 he lived in Paris ), to work there as a composer and as a journalist further carry out its activities. Later he moved back to the Netherlands and was until 1956 worked as a music editor for the weekly De Groene Amsterdam.

Work

His symphonies are a total of 7 polymelodisch and complex in the highest degree in their simultaneous combination of musical lines. In this regard, Vermeulen reminiscent of Allan Pettersson, partly also to Edgar Varèse and Charles Ives. His Symphony No. 5 is driving these trends to extremes and proved to be a long time merely in the rehearsals and performance for single shot ( by the Dutch label Donemus ) successful playable. In the meantime ( 30 June 1997) it was performed by Ingo Metzmacher with the Netherlands Radio Symphony Orchestra in a concert in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw.

Vermeulen's work includes, but is next to songs with piano and orchestral accompaniment, chamber music including two cello sonatas and a string quartet, as well as incidental music for The Flying Dutchman ( Flying Dutchman ).
