Matti Salminen

Matti Salminen (* July 7, 1945 in Turku ) is a Finnish opera singer ( bass ).

Life

Matti Salminen studied at the Music Institute, Turku, at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki (including with Matti Lehtinen ), on a scholarship in 1969 in Rome and Dusseldorf. For soloists, the choir of the Finnish National Opera rose on it, as he stepped in with 24 years in the role of King Philip in Verdi's Don Carlo. From 1972 to 1980 he was a member at the Cologne Opera, he is engaged at the Zurich Opera since 1984 (1979: Seneca in L' incoronazione di Poppea - Harnoncourt staging / Ponnelle ). From 1976 to 1988 he sang in more than 150 performances at the Bayreuth Festival. From 1967 to 1998 he sang every summer at the Opera Festival in Savonlinna ( Finland).

Matti Salminen was involved twice being awarded a Grammy in the category of Best Opera Recording: 1983 for the ring of the Nibelungen ( Bayreuth Festival ) and 1992 for Götterdämmerung (Metropolitan Opera, New York).

By the time he became one of the world's most recognized and sought-after artists in his field and is regularly in virtually every major opera houses and festivals on the stage. In September 2000, the first performance of the opera written for him "Lear" Aulis Sallinen of took place in Helsinki, whose title role he took over.

He speaks Finnish and almost perfect German.
