Mauby

Mauby is endemic in the Caribbean soft drink from bark extract of Colubrina elliptica or Colubrina arborescens, the Caribbean native buckthorn plants.

Production

In the manual production of Mauby pieces of bark from Colubrina elliptica or Colubrina arborescens are boiled and the decoction with plenty of sugar and various spices such as Anise, cloves or cinnamon mixed. Often, the brew is fermented with the help of remnants of the last manufacturing operation. The flavor of the finished beverage is initially sweet and removed malzbierartig, has in the finish but a slightly bitter note. Mauby is drunk cold as possible.

In some Caribbean countries Mauby is also industrially produced and sold, often as a syrup, the more water must be added. Partially, but the beverage is admixed with carbon dioxide. Well-known brands of finished beverages are:

  • Dominican Republic: Mabi Seybano, Mabi Cacheo (produced by Grupo Taino ).
  • St. Vincent and the Grenadines: Hairoun Mauby (manufactured by chatoyer Int. ).
  • Trinidad and Tobago: Mauby Fizzz (produced by PepsiCo ).

Areas of application

Manual produced Mauby is not only drunk for refreshment, but also used as a home remedy for various ailments, as for arthritis, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, high blood sugar and diarrhea. The antihypertensive effect has been demonstrated.
