History

The Río Maule formed the southern boundary of the Inca Empire. They could not conquer the territories south, which were stubbornly defended by the Mapuche.

Diego de Almagro in 1536 sent his henchman Gómez de Alvarado south. Up to the Río Maule they hardly met with resistance. At Río Itata they were involved in heavy fighting with the Mapuche and had to withdraw.
