Mauraz

Mauraz is a municipality in the district of Morges in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.

Geography

Mauraz is located on 625 m above sea level. Level, 12 km north-west of the district capital Morges ( straight line ). The farming village extends to the foot of the Jura plateau, at the mouth of the creek Morand in the Veyron, in the Vaud Mittelland.

The area of ​​only just 0.5 km ² large municipality area includes a small portion of the western rim of the Vaud Mittelland. The communal land is bordered on the north by Bach Morand, in the south of the Talniederung the Veyron. The highest elevation is 662 m above sea level. M. reached on the plateau west of the village. From the municipality surface 1997 4 % came from settlements, 11 % of forest and woody plants and 85 % to agriculture.

Mauraz consists of a lower part of the village (625 m above sea level. M. ) and an upper part of the village, the name of Sur le Cret ( 642 m above sea level. M. ) bears. Neighboring communities of Mauraz are L' Isle, Pampigny and Mont Richer.

Population

With 56 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Mauraz is the second smallest municipality in the canton of Vaud. Of the 95.8 % inhabitants are French-speaking, German-speaking 2.1 % and 2.1 % Italian-speaking (as of 2000). The population of Mauraz amounted in 1900 to 70 inhabitants. Since about 1950, the population commutes 35-48 residents.

Economy

Mauraz was until the second half of the 20th century, mainly coined by farming village. Even today, the farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding have an important role in the economic structure of the population. Some other jobs are in the local retail industry and the services available.

Traffic

The community is located off of larger thoroughfares. Road connections are available to L' Isle and after Pampigny. Mauraz itself has no connection to the public transport network. The stop at the Mauraz on September 12, 1896 inaugurated narrow gauge railway line from L' Isle to the Apple Bière -Apples- Morges line located on the northern outskirts of Pampigny, around 2.5 km from the center.

History

During the Middle Ages Mauraz belonged to the monastery Romainmôtier, after it came to power Mont Richer and made it a part of the municipality of Mont Richer. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536 Mauraz came under the administration of the bailiwick of Morges. Only in 1764 it became an independent municipality. After the collapse of the ancien régime Mauraz belonged from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic to the canton of Geneva, who came up then with the enactment of the Act of Mediation in the canton of Vaud. 1798 was assigned to the District Cossonay.

Attractions

Mauraz has a small chapel, but part of the parish of L' Isle.
