Maureen Tucker

Maureen Ann " Moe" Tucker ( born August 26, 1944 in New Jersey) is a former American drummer. She was a member of the group The Velvet Underground.

Life and work

Maureen Tucker became one of the first women's international fame on drums and was involved in most recordings of the Velvet Underground until 1970.. Exceptions are their studio album, Loaded, and three live albums from the year 1969 when these photos were taken, she paused because she was pregnant; she was in the band replaced by Doug Yule and during live performances by his brother Billy.

Tucker's drumming was different from the conventional use of a drum kit in multiple ways. She played preferably in the standing instead of the usual sitting. The bass drum set them with the batter head facing up and played it instead of a bass drum pedal with fur mallets in their hands. In addition, they almost always renounced the use of pool. Mostly they used a tambourine, which she placed among other things, on the skins of their drums. Some pieces of the Velvet Underground, they also contributed to selectively used agogical tempo changes that are primarily known from classical music and rarely heard in rock and pop music. The most striking example of this is the song of heroin from the album The Velvet Underground and Nico.

After their exit at the Velvet Underground in 1971 Maureen Tucker interrupted her tour activities and initially dedicated to their family life; already during the recording of Loaded ( 1970) she was temporarily represented by Billy Yule. It was not until fifteen years later, in the late 1980s, she went on tour again - first as singer, guitarist and drummer with the group Half Japanese, and later with his own band.

In an interview, published in mid-October 2010, they announced that they had withdrawn in favor of her grandson from the music. Her most recent publication is a guest appearance as a drummer in the play Red Tan of the band The Raveonettes, appeared in 2005 on their album Pretty in Black.
