Mauregatus of Asturias

Mauregato († 788 ) was 783-788 King of Asturias.

Life

Mauregato was an illegitimate son of King Alfonso I and a slave. CONTINUED His name is speculation that his mother came out of the sphere of Muslim ( Moorish), and reports of late, untrustworthy sources, which he himself came to power with Muslim support will be rejected by modern research.

After the death of children Mauregatos Wi predecessor silo whose widow Adosinda wanted to put her nephew Alfonso II, the son of King Fruela I, to the throne. Alfonso II had been passed over earlier because of his minority in the line of succession. This plan failed because Mauregato took power. About Mauregatos governance report the Asturian chroniclers nothing. Whether he was married and had descendants, is unknown.

Legend of the tribute of a hundred virgins

The legend that Mauregato the supremacy of the Emir Abd ar - Rahman I submitted and paid tribute to him, is the invention and has nothing to do with the historical Mauregato. Two chroniclers of the 13th century, Lucas from Tui and Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada, claiming Mauregato have the Muslims, to keep them in good spirits, delivered Christian virgins. This accusation appeared about the middle of the 12th century in a fake royal charter, the Privilegio de los votos, on, at that time but still without naming Mauregatos; the instrument underwent several unnamed kings to have the young women passed as annual tribute to the Muslims. In the second half of the 13th century, the material in the Poema de Fernán González was edited literary. There is, as in the Privilegio de los votos of a hundred virgins talk. Thus the legend of the tribute of the hundreds of young women (El tributo de las cien doncellas ) was born.
