Mauretania Tingitana

Mauretania Tingitana was a province of the Roman Empire.

After the incorporation into the Roman Empire split Emperor Claudius 42 AD, the north-west African kingdom of Mauritania in the provinces of Mauretania Mauretania Tingitana and Caesariensis on. The Tingitana included here the western part, especially the area of ​​today's northern Morocco including Ceuta and Melilla. Administrative headquarters was initially located in the domestic Volubilis and later Tingis, today Tangier. In the first half of the 5th century, the province, which exported mainly purple and precious woods, was overrun by the Vandals, but the Roman settlement remained.
