Maurice Lévy

Maurice Lévy ( born February 28, 1838 in Ribeauvillé, Alsace, † September 30, 1910 ) was a French mathematician, physicist and engineer.

Lévy studied at the École Polytechnique and the Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées and in 1858 an engineer, then wizard 1874 by Joseph Bertrand at the Collège de France. In 1875 he was appointed professor at the École Centrale and 1885 he succeeded Serrets at the Department of Analytical and celestial mechanics at the Collège de France. Since 1883 he was a member of the Académie des Sciences in Paris.

His many works include the hydrodynamics and hydraulics, the mathematical treatment of elasticity, the graphical statics, thermodynamics, kinematics, analytical mechanics and geometry.

As an engineer, to Lévy was mainly involved with materials science and applied mechanics.
