Maurice Tillieux

Maurice Tillieux ( born August 7, 1921 in Huy, Belgium, † January 31, 1978 in Tours, France ) was a French-speaking Belgian cartoonist, author and writer.

Biography

At the age of 14 years Tillieux published his first comic drawings. He began his career in 1936 with drawings and illustrations for the magazine Le Dupuis Mustique. He used initially different pseudonyms such as John Cliff, Ronald Scott, and Jill Morrison. Since his work (yet) as a draftsman brought the expected results, he started in the early 40s with the writing of detective novels.

In 1944 he went back to more drawing activities. His work has appeared regularly now in various magazines such as Le Mustique, Bimbo, Jeep, blonde and Spirou. At this stage he began the manufacture of the first comics.

A first success was the series "Felix ," a detective comic strip, from 1947 to 1956 at Heroic album, a threaded Fernand Cheneval Belgian comic magazine. 1956 moved to rival newspaper Tillieux Spirou. There he began a new detective series called " Gil Jourdan " ( German: " Jeff Jordan " ), which was virtually the continuation of "Felix " with altered main characters. In a tribute to her father, his daughter said, however, that the series was never really satisfied him, because she - was more appropriate to a wider, younger audience - in contrast to Felix.

" Jeff Jordan " was his most famous series, created for a total of 26 adventure in different lengths. The stories appeared in a total of 16 albums ( in German Carlsen ), of which the first 12 Tillieux recorded entirely himself. In the last four albums Tillieux delivered only sketches, and his assistant Gos took over the final drawings.

Another success story was " César " ( German: " Caesar " ) in contrast to the semi- realistic Jeff Jordan as a half-page gag strip ( " Funny " ) was designed. Since 1966 he was also the author of the series Marc et son Lebut voisin, which appeared as Marcus and master miller and Jupp Heister and Mr. Jemine in Germany.

After he had initially written mainly for scenarios drawn from his own stories, Tillieux later worked in an ever increasing extent also for other artists as a scenarist. Among other things, he developed stories for the series Harry and plate ( Will ), Natasha (of Walthéry ) and Yoko Tsuno ( by Roger Leloup ).

On January 31, 1978 Maurice Tillieux was killed in a car accident in Nice.

Importance

He is considered one of the founders and is also one of the most popular and successful members of the Ecole Marcin Elle. This traditional Belgian "Comic - school" is named after the nearby near Charleroi City Marcinelle where the publisher Dupuis has its seat. In the magazine " Spirou ", published under other artists such as André Franquin ( Spirou and Fantasio ), Peyo ( The Smurfs ) and Morris ( Lucky Luke ).

Tillieux was a master of the implementation of detective stories in the visual language of comics. He is well-designed and coherent actions in which humorous sequences are combined with exciting passages for an exciting adventure that will be implemented in atmospheric coherent imagings. Legendary are his backyards and roof landscapes. Typical of Tilleux are also his dry humorous dialogues that seem at times to be borrowed from movies.
