Mauro Del Vecchio

Mauro Del Vecchio ( born June 7, 1946 in Rome ) is an Italian politician and Lieutenant General in retirement.

Career

Del Vecchio was trained at the Military Academy in Modena and Turin from 1965 to 1969 and then served as an officer in the Bersaglieri. From March 1997 to November 1999 he commanded the Bersaglieri Brigade " Garibaldi ", with which he also took part in peacekeeping operations in the former Yugoslavia. On February 20, 2004, he took over command of the NATO Rapid Deployable Corps - Italy Solbiate Olona, near Milan.

Under his leadership, this new NATO Eingreifkorpsstab reached the necessary level of training for foreign missions. From August 2005 to May 2006 led Del Vecchio with his staff the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan. The NRDC -IT was in this operation the Allied Joint Force Command Brunssum Brunssum, Netherlands.

Del Vecchio commanded September 2007 to March 2008 the Italian Operations Command in Rome Cento Celle. The Prodi government pulled him in late 2007 for the post of chief of staff of the armed forces into consideration. In March 2008, Del Vecchio retired as a highly decorated Lieutenant General from active duty after he had the offer of the Chairman of the Democratic Party, Walter Veltroni assumed to run in the parliamentary elections in Italy in 2008 for the left-liberal Democrats.

Mauro Del Vecchio was from 2008 to 2013 Member of the Italian Senate.
