Maussac

Maussac is a commune with 409 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Corrèze, in the Limousin region. The municipality is a member of the Association of Municipalities Ussel - Meymac - Haute- Corrèze. The inhabitants call themselves Maussacois (it).

Geography

The municipality is located in the Massif Central on the Plateau de Millevaches and thus also in the Regional Natural Park Millevaches en Limousin.

Tulle, prefecture of the department is located, about 40 kilometers south-west, Égletons about 10 kilometers southwest and Ussel about 15 kilometers north-east.

Neighboring communities of Maussac are Meymac in the north, Combressol in the east, Darnets in the south, southwest, and Davignac Soudeilles in the west.

The Luzège, a tributary of the Dordogne, runs through the municipality.

Traffic

The village lies about 10 kilometers northeast of Exit 22 of the A89 autoroute.

History

Between the 8th and 6th centuries BC, the Celtic Lemoviken invaded the region and dominated the area until the conquest by the Romans in the 1st century. So also Maussac goes back to a Gallo- Roman foundation. The name originated from Mauriciacum, with the suffix acum is Celtic and means the homestead. Then was off Mauriciacum Maursac ( 1252) and finally Maussac

Attractions

  • The church of Saint Christophe, a religious building from the 12th and 19th centuries. The building is classified as a monument historique since 1974.
  • The coal mines of Maussac are unique in the Corrèze. Were exploited the mines of 1809 until 1943.
