1002 Mauterndorf was first mentioned in documents in 1023 became the place under the rule of the Archbishop of Salzburg, was in 1217 raised to market. In the 13th century a toll gate was erected by the Salzburg cathedral chapter, hence the name Mauterndorf. The place was in the Middle Ages the main trading center of the Lungau. 1253 the keep of the castle was built. In Mauterndorf found 1291/92 talks with the Bishop of Salzburg on the support of the Federal Landsberger instead, insurrection Styrian nobles against Duke Albrecht I. In the 15th century the castle by Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach and provost of Burkhard Weißpriach was extended. She served the cathedral chapter as the administration center. In 1806 it passed into state ownership.

In 1894 Hermann acquired from Epenstein, a rich military doctor from Berlin, the castle and rescued it from decay.

From 1939 to 1945, the castle was donated by the widow of his deceased godfather and " foster father " Epenstein Hermann Goering, though this gift was never registered in the Land Registry and later led to legal problems relating to the ownership. Goering had lived at a young age often at his godfather at the castle, but later stayed there only little more on. At the end of the war in 1945 he was trying to escape to Mauterndorf; due to the development of the front lines, there was but no longer do so. Because of the financing of the construction of water mains for Mauterndorf he was made an honorary citizen of the community. This honorary citizenship was not officially denied it until today. The Mayor of Mauterndorf Wolfgang Eder holds a denial not useful, because with Goering's death was the honorary citizenship extinct anyway.

1968 acquired the land Salzburg castle and renovated it from 1979 to 1982 with a capital of 20 million shillings ( about 1.5 million euros ).
