MÁV Class 242

MÁV - 242 series was a tender locomotive series of the Hungarian State Railways ( MÁV ).

History

In the 1930s, the Great Depression did not allow to invest heavily in rail vehicles. Therefore, the Hungarian State Railways decided to run a little fast trains at high speed. For such traits, the 242 series has been developed. She was a four-coupled tank locomotive with two leading and trailing axes. The first two aircraft were delivered by MÁVAG 1936. They had a steel firebox and a tilting grid with which it was possible to easily remove the large amounts of slag, which arose when burned Hungarian coal. The locomotives reached during test drives 152 km / h, but were allowed only 120 km / hr. They had a streamlined body, which was later removed due to better maintainability at the wheels.

The next two specimens of this series were built as recently as 1940 by MAVAG. Since the steel firebox of erstgelieferten machines already had cracks, copper fire rifles were built at this time.

Although these vehicles quite fulfilled the expectations placed upon them, it was because of the war and because actually stronger express locomotives were used, no further repeat orders.
