Mavericks, California

Mavericks is the name of a surf spots on the California coast.

Location

Mavericks is about 30 to 35 kilometers south of San Francisco on the American west coast in San Mateo County on the north end of Half Moon Bay.

Name

As in 1961, the first time three surfers arrived at this point for surfing, they had a German shepherd named Maverick here. After the shaft until then had no name, the surfers decided to name them after the dog. Therefore was the original spelling Maverick 's Point. However, the more common variant is now just Mavericks without apostrophe.

Waves

Due to the special shape of the seabed here the waves break very high. After heavy winter storms the breakers reach here regularly heights of 7.5 meters and peak values ​​of 25 meters. Therefore Mavericks applies a so-called big-wave spot.

Accidents
