Mavudis

Y'Ami (or Yami ) Iceland or Iceland Amianan, called in some sources as Mavudis Iceland, is the northernmost island of the archipelago of the Batan Islands and thus represents the northernmost point of the Philippines dar. Politically it belongs, as the entire island group, the Philippine province of Batanes.

Name

In most maps of the Philippines, they can be found under the name of Yami (or Y'Ami ). In the official website of Batanes it is conducted under the name Mavudis. Mavudis (or Mavodis ) comes from the language of the Ivatan, an indigenous ethnic group of this region, and means " down ". The fact that Mavudis is also a name variant of Mabudis Iceland 19 km south of Y'Ami can cause confusion. In addition to the island are also the term used by older locals Dihami, which means in the language Ivatan " north", familiar as it was known at the former Spanish colonial administration under the name Diamiv. In various sources, she is also listed under the name Amianan Iceland.

The designation may Yami here not to be confused with the indigenous Taiwanese ethnic group of Yami who live on a few islands north above the Philippine territory, but it geographically, culturally as well as linguistically related to the Ivatan.

Geography

The island lies 141 km southeast of the southern tip of the main island of Taiwan and 98 km to the nearest Taiwanese island, the "Little Orchid Island ". The distance to the Philippine main island of Luzon on the other hand is 288 km. The island is rocky on the coasts, but covered in its interior, surrounded by lush vegetation. According to the official website of Batanes, the island is uninhabited. Coconut crabs, regionally known as Tatu, can be found here in large numbers.

The island is 2.2 km long and up to a kilometer wide. In Y'Ami Hill reaches a height of 219 meters.
