Max Bacon

Max Bacon is a British rock singer. He became known to the wider public, especially as a singer of the AOR supergroup GTR, but was also the frontman of the less popular bands Moby Dick, Nightwing and Bronz.

Early years at Heavy Metal bands (1981-1985)

Moby Dick was a British heavy metal band that existed from 1981 to 1983. It consisted of the pairs of brothers Andrew and Gregg Evans (both guitar) and Chris (bass ) and Gary Steele (drums), as well as the singer Bacon. She has published in 1982 an EP called Can not Have My Body Tonight.

Nightwing was a London Heavy Metal band that released six studio albums and a live album between 1980 and 1996. Bacon is on Stand Up And Be Counted (1983 ) and My Kingdom Come (1984, produced by Genesis and GTR guitarist Steve Hackett ) to hear.

Bronz was also an English heavy metal band. Max Bacon is on all publications ( Taken By Storm ( 1984), Unfinished Business (2001) and Live - Getting Higher (2003) ) to hear.

GTR (1985-1987)

Beginning of 1985 brought him Ex -Yes and Ex -Asia guitarist Steve Howe and former Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett as a singer in her newly founded AOR supergroup GTR. With GTR, he took on a successful first album called GTR, which was produced by Howes former Asia- colleague Geoff Downes. The album achieved gold status in the U.S., the first single "When The Heart Rules The Mind " just missed out on a top 10 ranking in the U.S. Billboard charts. A subsequent U.S. tour due to smaller halls was also a success.

Tensions in the band led to the end of 1986 that Steve Hackett left GTR to continue his solo career. Attempts GTR continue without him, failed, so that the original line up of the band eventually broke up. Howe and Bacon tried then to revive the band with new members ( October 1986-October 1987 ): among other things, was the lead singer and guitarist Robert Berry for Hackett. But Bacon did not want to share the vocal work and Howe had difficulty with Berry's very American songwriting style. Berry then left the band, which soon completely dissolved. In the meantime, though, a second album was recorded, again with Downes as a producer, this is but unpublished until today, as between the musicians involved there is a disagreement about who owns the tapes.

Over the years, however, the songs of the second album will always resurfaced - on albums by Steve Howe and Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, Howe, Steve Hackett, Robert Berry, Asia, as well as Max Bacon's album The Higher You Climb (see below).

Phenomena (1986)

After the end of GTR Bacon was engaged by Co-Producer/Manager Wilfried F. Rimensberger for the Phenomena Allstar - rock project. He recorded several pieces for the "Dream Runner " album of Phenomena II ( 1986). The album was popular in Germany, Scandinavia, Japan and South America, other singers were Ray Gillen, Glenn Hughes and John Wetton.

Solo and collaborations with other musicians (since 1986)

After a failed reunion attempt by the band Asia with vocalist / bassist John Wetton, keyboardist Geoffrey Downes, drummer Michael Sturgis and guitarist Scott Gorham (ex Thin Lizzy ) Downes, Sturgis and Gorham teamed up with Phil Spalding, the former GTR bassist, and Max Bacon together to write songs for a project called Rain, which was never realized. Also involved was the songwriter Johnny Warman and from the beginning of 1988, the singer and bassist John Payne, the Downes had met through Spalding. Rain- pieces were, in part, until years later, released on albums of Asia, Downes and Bacon: During these sessions songs like Boys From Diamond City (still left over from the previous Asia- restart attempt, and Wetton emerged later both Bacon and sung by Payne ), Who Can Stop The Rain, Someday, Tears ( In My Eyes ) and Moon Under Water ( sung by both Bacon and Payne ) and The Higher You Climb ( first sung by Bacon, for a version that has appeared on his eponymous solo album, then sung by Payne ), which are later appeared on Bacon's solo album from The Banks Of the River Irwell. Part of Take No Prisoners from the same album probably also in the Rain- time.

Bacon's first solo album, The Higher You Climb appeared in 1996 and was characterized by mainstream pop -rock. Next to the Asia- song The Higher You Climb with No One Else To Blame and Hungry Warrior It contained two GTR- pieces, which were intended for a second album of this band, which was, however, never came into existence. On The Higher You Climb also all GTR band members find a Making Music, Phil Spalding and Nigel Glockler of the second GTR occupation.

Bacon's subsequent contacts with the GTR- musicians also included guitarist Steve Howe, on his album Portraits Of Bob Dylan (1999) he sang the Dylan song Going, Going, Gone.

He can be heard also on Mike Oldfield's albums Islands ( 1987) and Earth Moving (1989 ) (the former was produced by GTR- producer and Yes and Asia keyboardist Geoff Downes ).

In 2002 he released his second solo album From The Banks Of The River Irwell. Six of the pieces on this album came from nor the cooperation with Downes in the Rain project of 1987/88, are also musical contributions from Scott Gorham (Thin Lizzy ), Mike Oldfield, Michael Sturgis (Asia) and Phil Spalding (GTR, Mike Oldfield ) to hear.
