Max Carey

Max George Carey ( born January 11, 1890 in Terre Haute, Indiana, † May 30, 1976 in Miami, Florida) was an American baseball player and manager in Major League Baseball. His nickname was Scoops.

Biography

Max Carey ( George Maximilian Carnarius ) began after his school years studying the Lutheran theology, but for lack of money, he joined in 1910 the Pittsburgh Pirates in the National League game. The outfielder was particularly impressed by his defensive performance and his speed on the bases. Ten times he has seen the most stolen bases in the National League. Overall, he came at the end of his career at 738 stolen bases, a record that would endure until 1974 in the National League. Today (April 2006), he is with this number still ranks ninth. In 1922, he came up with 51 stolen bases in 53 attempts. 33 times he could even steal the Home Base, this still means the second place in the time list behind Ty Cobb with the 50th 1925 he reached with the Pirates to the World Series against the Washington Senators. The Pirates win the series in seven games, while Carey reached a batting average of 45.8 % and scored six runs.

After a dispute with Fred Clarke, who was zurücvkgekehrt to the Pirates to help managers Bill McKechnie, Carey was sold to Brooklyn. There he played his last game on 29 June 1929. For the Dodgers, he was also in the seasons 1932 and 1933 worked as a manager. Also in the women's professional league that was active in the 40s and 50s, he worked as a manager. In 1961 he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. In 1976, he died at the age of 86 years in Miami.
