1935 emerged as a gravel pit, a legal ban on swimming

The Max Eyth lake in Stuttgart is an artificial lake right on the Neckar, at the foot of vineyards between Mulhouse and Mayrhofen.

History

In the 1920s, was dismantled in Mayrhofen gravel in an increasingly growing pit, which is the origin of today's Max Eyth lake. In 1935, Stuttgart was the largest lake in the course of the channeling of the river Neckar. From 1935 a lido was set up at the south-east shore until the beginning of World War II. The lake at that time was not really a lake, but an extension of the Neckar with lovely details such as a lighthouse and cruise ships. Multiple sailing regattas on the lake were performed in the years 1953 and 1954 also motorboat races. In 1961, the grounds and the lake have been placed under conservation. The lake is 575 meters long and 345 meters wide and is divided by a peninsula into two legs. Namesake of the lake is the Swabian engineer and writer Max Eyth ( 1836-1906 ). During the Second World War, the lake was used by the pilots as a landmark, so that a dam built and the lake was pumped out. A dam burst in 1949 filled the lake with water again. Two decades later, the area underwent a fundamental reorganization, riparian zones were redefined and fixed.

However, lacking the supply of clean drinking water and in summer it often came to an algal bloom. A 2010 equipped groundwater inflow and the sealing off of the dam to the river Neckar should lead to better water quality.

It dispensed with the Württemberg Fishing Club for decades voluntarily forward to exploiting the northwestern part of the lake.

The Max Eyth lake is an overly nutrient-rich, highly productive pond that suffers especially under the strong production of small algae and zooplankton. In addition, the lake is almost exclusively fed with Neckar water. Especially in hot summers, the lake is regularly threatened by tipping over, with a switched when needed water fountain brings oxygen into the lake. On weekends, up to 15,000 people crowd into the area.
