Max Friedlaender (musicologist)

Life

Max Friedlaender studied in London and Frankfurt am Main Vocal (Bass) at Julius Stockhausen and debuted as a singer in London in 1880. From 1881 to 1883 he worked in Frankfurt and then in Berlin, where he turned to historical studies. 1887 doctorate Friedlaender in Rostock contributed to the biography of Franz Schubert (published in Berlin in 1887 ) and his habilitation in 1894 as a lecturer in music at the Berlin University.

1903 was Friedlaender's appointment as associate professor in 1908 a Privy Councillor and 1918 ordinary honorary professor. In 1911 he was a guest lecturer in the United States and became an honorary doctorate from Harvard University in Cambridge. He was next Rochus Freiherr von Liliencron Chairman of the Commission for the excited by Kaiser Wilhelm II Volksliederbuch for male choir ( 1906). His grave is located on the southwest Stahnsdorf.

Works

A number of hitherto unpublished Schubert's songs were published by Friedlaender first time. He edited and Others revisions of the songs of Schubert, Schumann and Mendelssohn and Beethoven's Scottish songs. Friedlaender was a choir school out, worked with Julius Stockhausen's vocal technique and voice training and wrote a larger number of essays on the newer art of song.
