Max Pallenberg

Max Pallenberg (born 18 December 1877 in Vienna, Austria - Hungary, † June 26, 1934 in Karlovy Vary, Czechoslovakia ) was an Austrian singer, actor and comedian. He was "one of the most important character comedian of his time " and often played under the direction of Max Reinhardt.

Life

After training as an actor Pallenberg occurred at a traveling theater and provincial theaters before Josef Jarno hired him in 1904 to the Theater in der Josefstadt in Vienna. In 1908 he went as an operetta comedian at the time of his famous Theater an der Wien, sang, among others, in the world premiere of Franz Lehár's operetta "The Count of Luxembourg " and played in 1910/11 at the German National Theatre in Vienna. Since 1911 Pallenberg played in Munich at the German Art Theatre in 1914 by Max Reinhardt committed to the German Theatre in Berlin, where he achieved his breakthrough as an artist and with best roles as the swallow in Gerhart Hauptmann's " sip and Jau " and Peachum in "The Threepenny Opera " soon became one of the most famous character comedian of his time.

Since the twenties he undertook international guest performances, acted on a number in Vienna and had here in Hugo von Hofmannsthal's written for him the title role of the 1923 comedy premiered " The Incorruptible " a special success. Other major roles were the title role in " Liliom " (1922 ), the theater director in " Six Characters in Search of an Author " (1924 ), and the title role in Max Brod and Hans Reimann's stage adaptation of " The Adventures of the Good Soldier Schweik " (1928 ) directed by Erwin Piscator. To Pallenberg's most important roles at the Salzburg Festival include the Mephisto in "Faust", Argan in " The Imaginary Invalid " (1923 ), Devil in "Everyman" (1926) and Truffaldino in " Turandot ", all in the direction of Max Reinhardt.

Pallenberg starred in several silent and sound films as 1915 in " Max and his two wives " and Fritz Kortner " The Good sinners " ( 1931). On February 20, 1916 Pallenberg married Fritzi Massary, one of the greatest divas of the 1920s. In 1933 he went with his wife to Austria into exile. In 1934, he died in a plane crash near Karlovy Vary in Czechoslovakia. His grave is located in the Urnenhain the fire hall Simmering (Department ML, Group 16, Number 1G). 1955 Pallenbergstraße in Vienna Hietzing was named after him.

Characterization

In describing the character comedian Pallenberg his great creative power, his improvisational skills and his wealth of linguistic variation are called. He is regarded as representative of the critical popular theater. In his play he was referring aggressiveness and grotesque with a, as well as the criticism of the rollers. Herbert Jhering wrote: Acting- Pallenberg is the boldest consequence of improvisational comedian dell'arte commedia. Kurt Tucholsky described Max Pallenberg once as a devil, a derailed God, a great artist.
