Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research

James W. Vaupel (Director )

The Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research ( MPIDR ) is a research institute of the Max Planck Society ( MPG) in Rostock. The Institute investigated in the research contract basic population research questions, such as the exploration of developments, structures, movements and historical aspects of human populations.

History

After 1945 and the marginalization of demographic research in Germany, the Max Planck Society in 1995 decided to give new impetus to start their own research Institute of Demography. On 1 October 1996, the Max Planck Institute took shape under the founding director James Vaupel on his work. 1999 January Hoem was appointed as the second director and another work area set up before in November 2002, a new building at the Institute Warnowufer replaced the hitherto temporary accommodation. Was started in 2004 on the joint initiative of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research and the Institute of Sociology and Demography and the Institute of Economics at the University of Rostock, the " Rostock Center for the Study of Demographic Change ", which in addition to the study of the causes and consequences of demographic change for Germany and Europe sees itself as a mediator between research and policy. 2007 Joshua Goldstein was appointed as the second director and successor to the retired January Hoem. In May 2009, Goldstein took over the management of the Institute as an Executive Director.

Research

The Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research conducts basic research and analyze the causes, describes current trends and predicted the future course of demographic processes. In addition, the research points to possible consequences arising out of the company. This natural population movements (birth, deaths), population trends and distributions as well as the historical demography is the research activity on the classic demographic work areas such as population structure, spatial population movements ( walking ), addition. Thus, the working range studied Evolutionary Biodemography the genetic, medical and biological aspects of aging, while the Laboratory of Population and Policy examines the relationships between policy and demographic change.

The Institute is divided into the following departments:

  • Aging and Longevity ( Laboratory of Survival and Longevity ), since 1996
  • Historical Demography ( Laboratory of Historical Demography ), since 2000
  • Economic and Social Demography ( Laboratory of Economic and Social Demography ), since 2007
  • Demographic data ( Laboratory of Demographic Data)
  • Statistical Demography ( Laboratory of Statistical Demography )
  • Evolutionary Biodemography ( Laboratory of Evolutionary Biodemography )

Furthermore, in 2009 there are the self- MPG Research Group " Modeling the Evolution of Aging " ( " Modeling the Evolution of Aging " ) and "The Life and Demographic Change " ( "Life Course Dynamics and Demographic Change" ). , The Virtual Institute of the Max Planck International Research network on Aging ( MaxNetAging ) was bound for an important research platform for international collaboration and an interdisciplinary network within the Max Planck society to the Institute in 2007.

In cooperation with the University of Rostock and other European universities, the Institute has been awarded the International Max Planck Research School for Demography, a training program for graduate students in demography. More junior programs created the Institute in 2007 with the MaxNetAging Research School and in 2005 with the European Doctoral School of Demography, one with eight leading research institutes jointly created eleven-month study program. Since 1999, the Institute is the professional journal Demographic Research and out since 2004, the book series Demographic Research Monographs ( Springer ) and the Demographic Research Information Letter from First Hand.

The Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research operates the project "Demographic Differences in Life - Course Dynamics in Eastern and Western Germany" ( DemoDiff ). The data collected in the course of DemoDiff project from eastern supplemental samples are compatible with the data of large Relationships and Family Panels pairfam, DemoDiff closely cooperates with the. DemoDiff data can be obtained, together with the pairfam data about the user service. The pairfam project based on a collaboration with the University of Bremen, Chemnitz University of Technology, the University of Mannheim and the Ludwig- Maximilians- University of Munich. It will be accompanied and advised by an international advisory board.

Infrastructure

The Institute is run by two directors who passed the Executive line in regular alternation. The scientific management of the services is subject to the directors and the senior researchers them below the work area. The non-scientific area is headed by the Managing Director and is composed of library, IT department, administration as well as press and publicity.

In 2011 ( about 60 young scientists under) and 40 administrative staff at the institute about 130 scientists worked. Together with around 170 visiting scientists and about 50 student assistants.
