Max Planck Institute for Mathematics

The Max Planck Institute for Mathematics (in short: MPIM ) is a leading mathematical research institute in Bonn, which is under the auspices of the Max Planck Society. The number of solid (including scientific) employees is comparatively small. Most mathematicians come as a visitor, to work for a limited time along with colleagues from around the world scientifically and exchanging with each other especially on math problems or to discuss new findings in seminars, discussions and the traditional four- clock tea.

Research at the Institute comprises the following areas:

  • Algebraic Geometry
  • Number Theory
  • Arithmetic Geometry and Automorphic Forms
  • Algebraic groups and arithmetic subgroups
  • Representation theory
  • Complex Analysis
  • Algebraic Topology
  • Partial Differential Equations
  • Mathematical Physics

The Institute was in 1980 from the Bonn Sonderforschungsbereich "Theoretical Mathematics" produced and was founded by Friedrich Hirzebruch, who was also a director until 1995. The Institute is today the directors Gerd Faltings, Werner Ballmann, Peter Teichner and Don Bernard Zagier. Günter Harder and Yuri Manin are active as emeritus at the Institute. Executive Director is currently Peter Teichner.

Math Workshop

Dating back to the year 1957 held in Bonn, the "Mathematical Workshop " took place. The first 30 workshops, organized by Friedrich Hirzebruch, include the " First Series ". The " Second Series " organized by all the directors of the Max Planck Institute, will take place in a two -year intervals since 1993.

International Max Planck Research School ( IMPRS )

The MPI for mathematics operates in conjunction with the University of Bonn, the International Max Planck Research School on Moduli Spaces. A IMPRS is an English doctoral program that allows a structured promotion. Speaker of the IMPRS is Gerd Faltings.
