Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light

The Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light (MPL ) is an institute of the Max Planck Society in Erlangen. It pursues basic research in the fields of optical measurement techniques, optical communications, optical materials, and optics in biology and medicine. It was created on 1 January 2009 by converting the set up for that purpose in 2004 Max Planck Research Group for Optics, Information and Photonics, University of Erlangen -Nuremberg. The Institute currently comprises four departments.

Structure

The Institute consists of three previous departments, each headed by an equal Director. The work in the departments is supplemented by " Scientific Service Groups" in the final. In addition, the MPL work different Max Planck Research Group. The Institute also an " International Max Planck Research School for Optics and Imaging " is located, which serves the structured doctoral training.

Leuchs - " Optics and Information "

The director is Prof. Gerd Leuchs, whose " Department of Optics " was integrated into the Institute. The department consists of 10 working groups on the topics of quantum information processing ( QIP ), Optical Communications ( OCOM ), interference microscopy and nano-optics ( InMik ), 4 -Pi- photon -atom coupling ( 4PiPAC ), Nonlinear Optics and Nanophotonics ( NONA ), Optical 3D metrology ( OSMIN ) Optical design and micro-optics ( BREATH ), Optical Quantum information Theory ( OQI ), quantum information theory ( QIT ), Theoretical optics (OTG ).

Division Russell - " photonics and new materials "

Head of this department is founded in 2005, Philip St. J. Russell. The research focuses in the field of new optical materials, in particular a photonic crystal fibers.

Department Sandoghdar - " nanophotonics and plasmonics "

On September 1, 2010 Prof. Vahid Sandoghdar was appointed director of a new department. With his appointment him an Alexander von Humboldt Professorship was awarded to the University of Erlangen -Nuremberg. Sandoghdar sets at MPL continued his previous work in the areas of nano-optics, biophotonics and plasmonics. He was previously a professor at the ETH Zurich.

Department Painter

On 6 November 2012, the appointment of Professor Oskar Painter was announced to another director and the award of another Alexander von Humboldt Professorship at the University of Erlangen- Nuremberg. Painter was in Pasadena, United States, and since 2011 co-director at the city's Kavli Nanoscience Institute since 2008 professor at the California Institute of Technology. In 2001, he was also at the California Institute of Technology, his Ph.D. acquired. Painter working in the field of quantum opto-mechanics and photonic nanostructures.

Max Planck Fellow Group - " Photonics and Precision Measurements"

The former head of the then third division of the Max Planck Research Group was up to the conversion of the Institute into a Max - Planck - Institute Prof. Lijun Wang. The focus of this department was on the use of optical methods for high-precision measurement of physical quantities (eg gravimetry or time measurement ), the group was disbanded in 2010.

Max Planck Research Group

  • Junior Research Group " Integrated Quantum Optics " - former manager: Christine Silberhorn
  • Research Group " Nonlinear photonic nanostructures " - Director: Fabio Biancalana
  • Research Group " Optical Quantum Information Theory " - Director: Peter van Loock

Organization

The Institute is a research institute of the Max Planck Society, became its directors with the founding decision, the head of Division 1, Prof. Gerd Leuchs, and Division 3, Prof. Philip St. J. Russell, appointed. The MPL is the first institute of the Max Planck Society in Northern Bavaria.

The Max Planck Research Group for Optics, Information and Photonics was initially set up to prepare and Evaluation in 2004 and was managed by the Friedrich- Alexander -University Erlangen -Nuremberg. The Institute of Optics, Information and Photonics was the Faculty of Science I and associated physics in particular the section. On 26 June 2008, the Senate of the Max Planck Society decided to establish the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light. The Max Planck Research Group was thus from 1 January 2009 for the new Max Planck Institute.

The institute is located mainly ( in the company of many research-oriented companies) on the premises of " research " of Siemens AG in Erlangen. Siemens AG is one of their renovated this building and made it available. Other parts of the Institute located at the University Physikum.

On 31 March 2011 the Erlanger City Council decided that the construction of the Max Planck Institute on the former parade ground at the Staudt Street ( in unmittelbaerer proximity to southern section of the university) may be built. This was preceded by a dispute between the city of Erlangen and conservationists who see the existence of these unique in their view, nature area at risk.
