Max Predöhl

Max Garlieb August Predöhl ( born March 29, 1854 in Hamburg, † March 11, 1923 ibid ) was a lawyer, senator and mayor of Hamburg.

Life

Max Predöhl was the son of a Hamburg merchant. He studied law and put his doctorate in 1876 from Leipzig. He was then a lawyer to 1893. He had with Dr. Schlüter a common law firm, later with Otto Wilhelm Moritz Brandis. Besides working as a lawyer, he was co-editor of the supplement of the Commercial Court newspaper.

On June 26, 1893 Predöhl was chosen by the Hamburg Parliament for the late Otto Wilhelm Moenckeberg senator. 1910 elected mayor in the Senate. In the years 1910/1911, 1914 and 1917 he held the office of the first, in the years 1913 and 1916 the Office of the Mayor second (→ Hamburg Senate from 1861 to 1919 ).

On May 13, 1911, the businessman Edmund Siemers YES handed the former main building of the University of Hamburg and the Senate of his native city. Max Predöhl took over as mayor of Hamburg with the following words on the building:

As late as 1918 Max Predöhl celebrated its 25th anniversary of service as a senator. He should not hold political office after the November revolution.

Family

Max Predöhl was married to Clara Predöhl ( born Amsinck ); his mother was a born Gossler. By marrying a Amsinck or Gossler, both from reputable merchant families, the social advancement could be significantly simplified in Hamburg from the 18th and 19th century. Together they had nine children ( five sons and three daughters ), including Andreas Predöhl, a later university professor.

Harvestehuder Route 20

The family moved in 1906 Harvestehuder Route 20, one of the most stunning streets of the Hanseatic city. A year earlier, the 5000 square meter site was gone as heir of his grandfather Clara, John Amsinck, to Max Predöhl. The house was newly built for the family, only the façade remains. The garden of the new home was designed by the close friend and director of the Hamburger Kunsthalle, Alfred Lichtwark. Probably Lichtwark also designed some of the furniture for the living room.

The house at Harvestehuder way was the headquarters of the representative business Predöhls during his tenure as mayor. The dignitaries of Hamburg, but also of the German Reich wrong there. Among others, Wilhelm II and the Crown Prince Predöhls guests. These imperial receptions signs houses were built before the house.

Today, the " Chateau " stands on the site of the house Predöhls, which was bombed during the Second World War. It housed the French consulate, which is located in the last few years in the Heimhuderstraße 55.
