Max Shachtman

Max Shachtman ( born September 10, 1904 in Warsaw, † November 4, 1972 in Floral Park, New York) was an American Marxist theorist and later anti-Soviet social democrat.

Political career

Born in Warsaw in 1905 Shachtman emigrated with his family to New York City. At first he was a Leninist and Trotskyist. He formed in 1927 after withdrawal from the Communist Party of the USA, with James P. Cannon ( with which he threw about 1939 ) and Martin Abern the Communist League of America (Communist League of America). After that, he was also a member of the Socialist Workers Party. Eventually he became the anti-Soviet Socialists. He drew up a often referred to as " Shachtmanism " Marxist theory. His work, as part of the " Old Left", influenced the emergence of neoconservatism.
