Max van der Stoel

Max van der Stoel ( born August 3, 1924 in Voorschoten, † April 23, 2011 in The Hague) was a Dutch politician of the Partij van de Arbeid ( PvdA) and internationally respected diplomat.

Studies and PhD

Van der Stoel holds a degree in Law and Sociology at the University of Leiden. 1947 initially receiving a doctorate in Doctor iuris and 1953, the PhD in sociology.

From 1999 to 2001 van der Stoel owner of Rudolph Cleveringa Chair in Human Rights at the University of Leiden. From January 2001 to January 2003, he was also a Visiting Professor of International and European Law at the University of Tilburg.

Political career in the Netherlands

Member of the First and Second Chamber

Already in 1946 joined van der Stoel of the PvdA with. After graduation, he was initially 1953 to 1958 Employees of Wiardi Beckman Foundation, the scientific bureau of the PvdA. Then he was up in 1963 Secretary of the Partij van de Arbeid of International Affairs.

1960 to 1965 he was first deputy of the First Chamber ( Eerste Kamer ). From 1966 to 1973, from 1977 to 1981 he was a representative of the Labour Party Member of the Second Chamber ( Tweede Kamer ).

State and Foreign Minister

In the cabinet of Jo Cals van der Stoel was dated 22 July 1965 to November 22, 1966 Secretary of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

From May 11th 1973 to December 19, 1977, he was den Uyl as successor by Norbert Schmelzer foreign minister in the cabinet of Joop. In this role he was also in the second half of 1976 President of the Council of the European Union. During a visit to Czechoslovakia in February 1977 van der Stoel also spoke with the speaker of the Czechoslovak civil rights movement Charter 77 Jan Patocka, which led to significant protests in the Czechoslovak government side.

In the cabinet of Dries van Agt van der Stoel was September 8, 1981 to May 29, 1982 Foreign Minister again. From 1986 to 1992 he was a member of the State Council. For his contribution to the Dutch policy to him the honorary title of Minister of State was awarded on 22 May 1991.

After his retirement from Dutch politics, he founded the International Max van der Stoel Award for Human Rights.

International Renowned Diplomat

Max van der Stoel earned beyond a reputation as an internationally respected diplomat. He was from 1983 to 1986 Ambassador of the Netherlands to the United Nations.

1991-1999 he was the rapporteur ( Rapporteur ) of the UN for the observance of human rights in Iraq. He was also a 1993 high until 1 July 2001 Commissioner on National Minorities of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe ( OSCE).

Since 1 July 2001 Max van der Stoel, Special Advisor to the Secretary General and Macedonia Envoy for the Common Foreign and Security Policy of the Council of the European Union Javier Solana.
