MaxDB

SAP MaxDB is a relational database management system (RDBMS ) from SAP. The software has emerged from the Adabas D database, contributed to 2004, the term SAP DB. The manufacturer classifies the product as a database for enterprise applications within large networks with high load and high data volume.

History

The development of the database Computer AG originally started in 1977 at the Technical University of Berlin as a research project with their partners Nixdorf led by Rudolf Munz. The product initially was named VDN ( " Distributed Database Systems Nixdorf " ) and later RDS ( " Relational Database System"). 1981-1989 took Nixdorf Computer, the system under the name REFLEX and DDB / 4 1989 was sold under the name Entire SQL - DB Server and spun off into a separate company, the SQL database systems GmbH.

In 1992, the rights over the Software AG, which drove the database system under the name of Adabas D. Since 1994 it has been certified for the data management of the SAP ERP software. In 1997, the development and marketing was split: SAP now offered its own line of development under the name SAP DB, Adabas D was further offered under this name.

In 2003/2004, MySQL AB has received in the course of a cooperation agreement with SAP AG distribution rights to the SAP DB. However, the product itself was proprietary to SAP. As of version 7.5, the name changed at first in MaxDB, then in MaxDB by MySQL. Further development and support within the SAP applications were continued to be provided by SAP. The collaboration ended in October 2007. Starting with version 7.7, the name was changed in SAP MaxDB.

Development and maintenance tasks of the versions offered by SAP are performed exclusively by SAP since 1997. The commercial distribution for use with SAP applications made ​​exclusively by SAP and our partners.

License

MaxDB stood for the operation of non -SAP applications to users up to version 7.6.00 alternatively under a commercial or free Community License ( open source ) are available. Technically, the two variants did not differ. The difference was in the support agreements and warranty obligations that went with the commercial version of the Community license also. SAP MaxDB versions greater than 7.6.00 not released by SAP under an open source license, but can also be operated under a community license in the context of non- SAP applications. For the operation of SAP applications with SAP MaxDB the licensing and contractual regulations of SAP AG apply.

For projects with non-GPL licensed source code of the SAP DB versions can be used up to and including 7.2 7.4. This is under the GPL / LGPL license.

Environment

The database server can be used under Windows from Windows 2000 and various Unix systems (Linux, AIX, HP- UX, Solaris, and others). The community version are currently available for Linux, Windows, AIX, and Solaris platforms.

With Database Studio is an administration tool with a graphical user interface. It offers the DB administration, Lade-/Entlademöglichkeiten and SQL query functionality under one roof and is currently provided for both Windows and Linux systems. The software is Java-based and one on the Eclipse platform fitting end, integrated solution. It can allow SAP MaxDB versions from 7.6 and version 7.5 will be operated with minor restrictions.
