Maxi Priest

Maxi Priest ( born June 10, 1961 in Lewisham, London, United Kingdom; actually Max Alfred Elliott ) is a British reggae singer and songwriter.

Life

The family of Priest emigrated to the Second World War from Jamaica to London. There, Maxi Priest was born the second youngest of nine children. His family was active in the Pentecostal movement, Priest himself later converted to the Rastafari and changed his name to Maxi Priest.

Priest worked as a carpenter before he became active in the reggae scene in London. His debut album, You're Safe appeared in mid 1985.

His recent in the fall of 1987 third album Maxi Priest earned him the final breakthrough. Especially recorded in the reggae sound cover versions Some Guys Have All The Luck (Robert Palmer ) and Wild World (Cat Stevens) were in England and the USA to smaller hits.

The following album Bonafide appeared in mid-1990 and became his biggest hit. The single Close To You ( composed by singer-songwriter Gary Benson ) reached # 1 in the U.S. and the top ten in the UK and Germany. Priest worked throughout his career often like with other artists, including Sly & Robbie, Beres Hammond and Apache Indian. The duet singles Set The Night To Music (1991 ) with Roberta Flack, House Call ( 1991) with Shabba Ranks and That Girl (1996 ) with Shaggy were top 20 hits.

The success of Maxi Priest took from the mid- 1990s, however, from more and more. His last two albums Combination (1999) and 2 The Max ( 2005) were sold only sparse.

His music has, in addition reggae and pop and R & B elements. His fans gave him the nickname King of Lovers Rock.
