Maxim Biller

Maxim Biller ( born August 25, 1960 in Prague ) is a German writer and columnist.

Life

Biller was born to Russian Jewish parents in Prague and emigrated with his parents and his sister, who later became a journalist and writer Elena Lappin, the age of ten in 1970 to West Germany. He studied in Hamburg and Munich literature. After studying at the German School of Journalism in Munich, he wrote for speed, mirror and time. His first short story collection If I am rich, and once dead (1990 ) was referred to in the Süddeutsche Zeitung as " the return of the Jewish literature to Germany." His novels and short stories have been translated into several languages, including the novel The daughter, who has appeared in France in 2003 in the prestigious series "folio " at the publishing house Gallimard. In 2007, two of his short stories in the New Yorker printed, " which is so common in German as Pope Will ". In July 2010 he started in the German edition of Rolling Stone entitled " Maxim Biller feuilleton Show" to write a socio-political column. Biller presented in two columns cooperation again, because the magazine wanted to print a text on Ferdinand von Schirach not unchanged.

In October 2011, Biller published in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sunday newspaper an essay in which he formulated the thesis that after the era of group 47 and postmodernism in German literature a new literatische era had dawned; they have ushered Rainald Goetz with the novel maniac who appeared in 1981. This literary epoch, says Biller, draw out due to the extreme mesh of life and work of the author and stand under the sign of an extremely sensitive, public conscious and narcissistic narrator, why Biller calls this era " Ichzeit ".

Biller lives in Berlin. For the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sunday newspaper, he wrote the satirical column " Moral Stories ". One of the main characters, Dudek Kohn, is an unsuccessful Jewish writer whose seven year old daughter Rosa has always better ideas than he.

Biller's mother, Rada Biller has, until 2011 also published several stories and a novel in Berlin Verlag.

" Ezra " Controversy

In 2003, attracted Biller sensation with his book of Ezra, whose distribution was the publisher prohibited in the spring of 2003 after about 4,000 copies had been delivered. In the autobiographical text intimate details about the narrator and his partner " Ezra " are described. Here are strong similarities between the figure of Ezra and Biller's former partner Ayse Romey recognizable. In the figure, " Lale ", a domineering, alcoholic, mentally ill, in turn, their mother Birsel Lemke felt defamed.

Romey and Lemke their sheer injunction; in the following case, the District Court of Munich prohibited the further spread of the book because it looked violates the privacy rights of the applicants. On 21 June 2005, the Federal Court dismissed the appeal of the publisher, who then turned to the Constitutional Court. Finally, the First Senate of the Federal Constitutional Court on 12 October 2007 upheld the judgment of the Supreme Court in many parts. The work may not be further disseminated and publicized for infringement of personality rights by the Kiepenheuer & Malevich.

Then demanded Romey and Lemke before the Landgericht München I by the author € 50,000 each in damages. Then signed more than 100 people, including Günter Grass, Herbert Achternbusch Feridun Zaimoğlu, Elfriede Jelinek and Peter Zadek, on the initiative of the publisher Gina Kehayoff a call for assistance Maxim Biller. On 13 February 2008, the Munich District Court sentenced the author and the publisher Kiepenheuer & Petrovich, in which the book was published, to pay 50,000 euros in compensation to Romey. Meanwhile, this sentence was lifted. " The Federal High Court stated that the novel was indeed, serious ' violated the privacy rights of the applicant, stood her but no damages to. Reason for the reluctance is the substantial interference with the freedom of art, the which is the ban. "

On 10 June 2008, the Supreme Court ruled on the injunction of Lemke and pointed it back (VI ZR 252/ 07). Your right to privacy is - in contrast to her daughter - not severely injured, the judges; in this case, have the artistic freedom takes precedence over the right to privacy. For the book of this time being last sentence had no impact as it still may not be distributed by the Kiepenheuer & Malevich.
