Maxime Verhagen

Maxime Jacques Marcel Verhagen ( born September 14, 1956 in Maastricht) is a Dutch politician ( CDA). From 2010 to 2012, he was Minister of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation and Deputy Prime Minister of the Netherlands in the Cabinet Rutte I. Prior to that he was Foreign Minister in the Cabinet Balkenende IV

Life

Verhagen studied history at Leiden University until 1986. 1976 he became a member of the party CDA and was until 1989 a municipal councilor of Oegstgeest. From 1989 to 1994 he was a deputy in the European Parliament. On May 17, 1994, he became a deputy of the Second Chamber of the States General. Within the CDA, he was elected on 11 July 2002 as a successor to Group Chairman of Jan Peter Balkenende.

On 22 February 2007 he was Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands in the Cabinet Balkenende IV and followed in this office Ben Bot Verhagens successor as party leader was Pieter van Geel. In February 2010, the cabinet fell, and Verhagen was only a caretaker in office. In addition, he assumed responsibility for development aid of a retired social democratic colleagues. From 2010 to 2012, he was party leader of the CDA, first in the capacity as Chairman, then from October 14, 2010 as the Minister of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation. He also led the coalition negotiations for the CDA, which led to the formation of minority government I Rutte.
