Maximilian Joseph von Chelius

Baron Maximilian Joseph von Chelius ( born January 16, 1794 in Mannheim, † August 17 1876 in Heidelberg ) was a German ophthalmologist and surgeon.

Family

Maximilian Joseph von Chelius was the son of Christoph Ernst Chelius (* February 26, 1754 in Gross-Gerau ) and Johanna Anna Ottilie Böhm ( born August 31, 1761 Mannheim). Maximilian married on 22 April 1819 in Karlsruhe Anna Waldburga Sensburg. She was the daughter of Ernst Philip of Sensburg and Mary Magdalene Thecla Schmitz. From this marriage came forth a son: Franz von Chelius was born on September 6, 1821 in Mannheim, and died on June 6, 1899 in Ahrweiler. Franz was like his father, a surgeon, and married on January 2, 1859 in Karlsruhe, born in Mannheim Marie Josepha Anna Eleonora Minet.

Life

Chelius began his medical studies at age 15, studied in Paris and Vienna and eventually earned his doctorate at age 18. As a student he was a member of the Corps Suevia, then liberation fighters and regimental doctor. In 1817 he became an associate, in 1818 full professor for general and ophthalmic surgery in Heidelberg. Under his leadership, the surgical University Clinic Heidelberg received national significance. One of his most famous patients was Frédéric Chopin, who was being treated for a Fingervereiterung in Heidelberg. Chelius has contributed significantly to the construction of the Medical Faculty of the University of Heidelberg. In 1864 he asked after 46 years of service as a professor at retirement. 1866 Chelius was elevated to the hereditary nobility. In 1876 he died and was buried in Heidelberg Cemetery Mountain. The brainchild of sculptor Greiff tomb is made of white marble and consists of a Latin cross with a gothic edge contour. On relief- decorated, labeled double panels in the arch are family coat of arms and incorporated a caduceus in the center axis. The tomb was probably built for the 10 years earlier deceased wife Anna. In their family coat of arms is a tape with the saying " If you're sure, act boldly ." The family crest Chelius ' carries three roses and tape the motto " When in doubt, go with caution ."

His house, the Palais Morass, in 1906 the seat of the Palatinate Museum of the City of Heidelberg.

Maximilian von Chelius was the grandfather of the composer, diplomat and officer Oskar von Chelius ( 1859-1923 ). The Dutch prince consort Claus von Amsberg (1926-2002) was one of his descendants.
