Mayor Synagogue, Istanbul

The Mayor Synagogue ( Turkish Mayor Sinagogu ) is a former synagogue in the district of Beyoğlu Hasköy in Istanbul, Turkey.

According to historian Lorans Tanatar Baruh the synagogue was built in the Byzantine period and was Maior (Latin for larger ) because it was the largest in the district. Others, however, sources say that the synagogue was built 300 to 500 years ago by Jews of Mallorca. According to the historian Jak Deleon there were in the 1950s, a Mayorka Synagogue in Hasköy.

The synagogue is now used as storage space, workshop, house and pool hall. In September 2009, the artist Serge Spitzer used the site for his installation art works Molecular Istanbul.
