Mayya (rural locality)

Maija (Russian Майя; Yakut Майа ) is a village ( selo ) in the Republic of Sakha ( Yakutia) in Russia with 7288 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

It lies 45 km as the crow southeast of the capital Yakutsk, Republic of the same name, endorheic lake.

Maija is part of the Ulus Megino - Kangalasski and is located some 30 km south-east of the administrative center of Nizhny Bestjach. The village is the seat and only town in the rural community ( selskoje posselenije ) Selo Maija.

History

Inhabited mainly by Yakut village was founded in 1902. Since 1930, Maija administrative seat of Ulus ( Rajons ), but this function lost momentum in 2007 which, although smaller, but closer to Yakutsk and transport connections, in urban-type settlement located Nizhny Bestjach.
