Mazlum DoÄŸan

Mazlum Doğan (* 1955 in Karakoçan, † March 21, 1982 in Diyarbakır prison ) was a senior PKK cadres and central committee member of the PKK.

He received his education in Balıkesir. In 1976 he participated in the student movement, which was the forerunner of the PKK. He was the first editor of the newspaper Serxwebûn. In 1979 he was imprisoned. He was charged with membership of the PKK, assisting in the creation and leadership of the organization, involvement in the kidnapping of a fellow party members from the state hospital in Diyarbakir and using a false identity.

With 27 years sat Mazlum Doğan on March 21, 1982 the day on which the Kurds celebrate their Newroz Newroz and fires are lit everywhere, in the Turkish prison in Diyarbakir protest against the Turkish government to his cell on fire and hanged himself. With this act was to draw attention inter alia to the grievances in Turkish prisons. In Turkish prisons were applied systematically at this time by the government torture. This action Mazlum Dogan was the prelude to a series of hunger strikes and acts of resistance of political prisoners in 1982.

Mazlum Dogan fact has since been recognized in the PKK and its environment organizations in the form of commemorative events. The PKK has named its cadre after him and holds every year in several European countries through youth festivals that bear his name.
