Mbale District

Mbale is a district in eastern Uganda at the foot of Mount Elgon, which lies on the border with Kenya. The capital is the same Mbale. The area of ​​the district is 2466.7 km ².

The 2002 census found a population of 721 242 people, of whom 92 % live in rural environment. Therefore, the agriculture with the main production goods of coffee, beans, plantains, corn, onions, potatoes, carrots and sweet potatoes is the most important economic sector.

The population is largely to the Bamasaba and Bagisu whose language is Lugisu important lingua franca in Mbale.
