Mbarara

Location of Mbarara in Uganda

Mbarara is a city of about 80,000 inhabitants in southwestern Uganda and the center of Ankole. It is the capital of the district of Mbarara and lies at an altitude of about 1473 m above sea level.

During the invasion of Tanzanian troops who were involved in the overthrow of Idi Amin, Mbarara considerable destruction was exposed.

The city is the headquarters of Mbarara University, founded in 1989, as well as a college of the Archdiocese of Mbarara.

Traffic

The city has since April 2005 after the 2.4 km long was fastened Victor Bwana Road, five paved roads ( teergebundener macadam surface): Mbarara High Street, Mbaguta Street, Bishop Wills Street, Bucuku Street and Victor Bwana Road. An airport which is however not regularly served by commercial airliners exists.
