Mbugu (proper name: Ma'a, not to be confused with Maa ) is a mixed language spoken by about 7000 people (as of 1997) is spoken in the Usambara Mountains in Tanzania. The ethnic population of Mbugu however, includes about 32,000 people.

The special feature of this language is that it is indeed likely to be classified by the sound system and the grammar ago as Bantu language ( the Pare closest standing), from the vocabulary ago but rather stands near the südkuschitischen languages. This condition is caused by language mixing.

In theory provides the Mbugu is a problem because it is difficult to decide which language family is genetically assign.

It is believed that the Bantu language is the older layer, called the substrate.
