McArthur is a village in Vinton County, Ohio, United States. McArthur had 2000 1.888 inhabitants according to the census. It is the county seat of Vinton County.

History

The story goes back to the McArthur 1815, when Joel Sage settled here and opened an inn. The settlement was first called by the inhabitants after Ohio Governor Duncan McArthur McArthurstown. As of 1851, the place is simply called McArthur. Given the surrounding coal and iron ore deposits as well as the implementing railroad to McArthur developed very slowly. 1850 lived 424 persons and 1890 only 888 inhabitants. After all, there were 1888 in McArthur, a bank, three newspapers and four churches. At this time lived the majority of inhabitants by retail or work in mines. Although in the 20th century, it was not significantly grew in 2000, with its 1,888 inhabitants the largest town of Vinton County. About one sixth of all the inhabitants of the county were living in 2000 in McArthur. Economic basis of most inhabitants are today the offering of goods and services for agriculture.
