The McCarran International Airport Las Vegas ( IATA: LAS, ICAO: KLAS, including McCarran International Airport ) is the international airport of the city of Las Vegas and Clark County in the U.S. state of Nevada. The east of the Las Vegas Strip, in the suburb of Paradise airport had 39.4 million passengers (2010, -2.6 % compared to 2009 ) considered the eighth largest passenger volume of the United States and is consistently ranked in 22nd place

History

The airport was founded in the 1940s by the pilot George Crocket as Alamo Airport. Later, the site was taken over by the county Clark County, which owns the airport today. As namesake Senator Pat McCarran 1948 was chosen, which took a leading role in the development of aviation within the U.S.. From the early 1980s saw the expansion plan " McCarran 2000 ' at a cost of 300 million U.S. dollars for the further development of the airport. Except for a new terminal, extended runways and other infrastructure measures also ensured a newly introduced unified computer system for all terminals and airlines for the future safety. To date, the airport is constantly growing, so are now 104 Gates (as of early 2008 ) in operation. For the future (until 2012 ) the construction of a completely new terminal with 14 additional gates for an estimated 1.6 billion U.S. dollars is planned.

Airlines

The largest airlines in Las Vegas include Southwest Airlines and U.S. Airways. From the German-speaking countries there are direct flights with Condor, which flies twice a week from Frankfurt am Main to Las Vegas.

Las Vegas offers numerous slot machines at the airport.

On the grounds of the airport is a private terminal, which is used for handling the Janet flights to various military facilities in Nevada. From the terminal about twelve flights are handled daily.

On 16 October 2003 Speedcheck was introduced, a system that outputs boarding passes for various airlines.

Expansion and future

The airport has grown ( by 14 percent ) from 2003 to 2004 to 41 million. The maximum capacity of the airport is reached annually at 55 million passengers and 625,000 aircraft movements. This utilization is already forecast for the year 2017. To relieve the airport, therefore, is the construction of an additional airport ( Ivanpah Valley Airport ) about 50 kilometers south of the town near the California border in the planning stage.
