McGill, the parts of his property in this area to the Steptoe Valley Mining and Smelter Company ( Nevada Consolidated Copper Co. ) (later Kennecott ) sold back. Between 1906 and 1908 a copper smelter was built and connected to the Nevada Northern Railway, whereby the place grew. Due to a fire in 1922 large parts of the industrial plants and many buildings were destroyed in the year, but up to 1930 again. In the late 1970s, the copper smelter was closed and later demolished. The historic McGill Drugstore Museum recalls the heyday of the place.
