Geography

McHenry is located in the northwest suburban area of Chicago at 42 ° 20'00 " north latitude and 88 ° 16'00 " west longitude and extending over 39 km ². The city lies on the Fox River, a right tributary of the opening into the Mississippi River Illinois.

History

The territory of the present-day city was originally inhabited by Indians from the tribe of Potawatomi.

After the acquisition of land by white settlers, the area belonged to the first Putnam County, from 1831, the Cook County was founded. In 1836, the McHenry County was formed, initially to the present-day Lake County belonged. 1837 McHenry became the first county seat of the county. 1844, the county seat was moved to the present-day Woodstock.

The city and the county was named after William McHenry (1771-1835), an officer of the U.S. Army in the War of 1812 and numerous Indian wars.
