McKinley Park is a census -designated place (CDP ) in Denali Borough in Alaska in the United States. The area is located at the George Parks Highway at the entrance to Denali National Park. This is home to Mount McKinley, the highest mountain with 6,194 meters of the North American continent.

History

The creation of jobs in Denali National Park and tourism associated with the park contributed significantly to the colonization of the area. McKinley Park is mainly inhabited in the summer months, during the high season of Mount McKinley tourism. Few people live year-round in the village. The Denali National Park is open year round, but a bus service is only offered in the period from May to mid-September. The hotel is located in the area and almost all visitor centers are closed during the winter months.

Demography

At the time of the census in 2000 ( U.S. Census 2000) had McKinley Park CDP 142 inhabitants on a land area of 452.2 km ². The average age was 41.0 years ( national U.S. average: 35.3 years ). The per capita income ( per capita income engl. ) amounted to U.S. $ 27,255 ( U.S. National Average: U.S. $ 21,587 ). 11.5 % of residents were with their income below the poverty line ( national U.S. average: 12.4% ) .27,5 % of the population is German, 19.7% Irish and 16.9% are of English descent.

Economy and infrastructure

The Denali National Park, the Toklat Ranger Station, buses, hotels, lodges, restaurants, guided rafting tours and other tourist activities offer in high season work opportunities. Year-round employment offer to a nearby coal mine, a power plant and the school district. In the town itself there is no state school. The medical care is ensured, among other things by the Healy Health Clinic in Healy. The area is connected via the George Parks Highway to Anchorage and Fairbanks. In Denali National Park, there are three take-off and landing runways available for air traffic. In addition, the U.S. Park Service operates an airstrip in McKinley Park. From Anchorage and Fairbanks are buses in the area. Shuttle buses in McKinley Park offer tours in the National Park. Furthermore, flight and helicopter tours are offered in the resort.
