MCPB is a chemical compound selected from the group of the phenoxy carboxylic acids.

Production and representation

MCPB can be obtained by reaction of o-cresol with chlorine and then reacting the intermediate 2-methyl- 4-chlorophenol with γ -butyrolactone. Alternatively, 2-methyl -4-chloro -phenol are reacted with 4- chlorobutyronitrile and sodium hydroxide to MCPB.

Properties

MCPB is a colorless -combustible solid that is practically insoluble in water. It decomposes on heating. The technical product is yellowish brown.

Use

MCPB is used as an active ingredient in pesticides. It was approved in the U.S. in 1964 and used as a herbicide for use on peas before they bloom to combat thistles, buttercups, smartweed and other broadleaf weeds.

The active ingredient MCPB was approved with effect from 1 May 2006 to the European Union for use as herbicide. In Austria and Switzerland pesticides are approved with this drug, in Germany not.
