Meade County (Kentucky)

Meade County is a county located in the U.S. state of Kentucky. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Brandenburg, which was named after Solomon Brandenburg, who donated the land to the city's founding available.

Geography

The County is located in northwestern Kentucky, is bordered to the north by the state of Indiana, separated by the Ohio River and has an area of 840 square kilometers, of which 41 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Hardin County and Breckinridge County.

History

Meade County was formed on December 17, 1823 from parts of Breckinridge County and Hardin County. It was named after James Meade, who was killed in 1813 at the Battle of River Raisin.

According to the census of 2000, there were 26,349 people in Meade County. Of these, 108 people were living in collective centers, the other residents living in 9,470 households and 7,396 families. The population density was 33 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 92.37 percent White, 4.13 percent African American, 0.59 percent Native American, 0.53 percent Asian, 0.13 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.83 percent from other races groups; 1.43 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.15 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 9,470 households out of which 42.2 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 64.1 percent were married couples living together, 9,7 percent were single mothers, 21.9 percent were non-families, 18.4 percent of all households and by 6.5 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size was 3.15 persons.

Based on the county the population was spread out 29.8 percent of residents under the age of 18, 9.1 percent between 18 and 24 years, 32.7 percent between 25 and 44 years, 20.3 percent between 45 and 64 years and 8.1 percent were 65 years old or older. The average age was 32 years. For every 100 females there were 100.4 males. For every 100 females aged 18 years old or over, there were 98.3 men statistically.

The median income for a household was $ 36,966, and the median income for a family was $ 40,592. Males have a median income of $ 30,835, women $ 22,038. The per capita income was $ 16,000. 9.3 percent of families and 11.3 percent of the population lived below the poverty line. Of these, 13.8 percent were children or adolescents under age 18 and 12.3 percent of those 65 years.
