Meade County (South Dakota)

Meade County is a county located in the state of South Dakota in the United States. In the 2000 census, Meade County had 24 253 inhabitants.

History

It was founded in 1889, and named after the Fort Meade. The Fort Meade served in 1878 as a garrison for the military post. Has received the name after General George Meade Fort Meade. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Sturgis.

Geography

Meade County has an area of ​​9020 square kilometers, of which 8989 km ² of land and 31 km ² (0.34 %) of water surface, so the district is the largest in South Dakota and is about half the size of Rhineland- Palatinate, but at just under 25,000 residents only a population density of 2.7 inhabitants per square kilometer.
