Mechtild Rothe

Mechtild Rothe ( born August 10, 1947 in Paderborn ) is SPD politician and since 1984 a member of the European Parliament.

Mechtild Rothe grew up in Bad Lippspringe. After secondary school certificate, she worked in the architectural firm of her father, and later as a laboratory chemist. 1974 Rothe began a study. First she studied German and chemistry for teachers and then the social sciences. From 1978 to 1984 Rothe worked as a secondary school teacher.

Mechtild Rothe is since 1970 member of the SPD, where he was active at various levels of the party. At times, she was also a member of the city council of Bad Lippspringe. Since 1984 she is a member of the European Parliament. By 1994, the focus of their work was the local agricultural policy since Rothe devoted particularly to energy policy, particularly renewable energy and energy efficiency. On these issues she was also repeatedly rapporteur of the European Parliament. Since the start of its parliamentary activity a foreign policy focus remains the Cyprus policy. Between 1999 and 2004, Rothe held the chairmanship of the Committee of the EU-Cyprus Mixed Parliamentary Committee. With the new legislature and the accession of Cyprus to the EU, there is no Joint Parliamentary Committee EU - Cyprus more. Nevertheless, there remains a political priority areas of Cyprus, the solution of the Cyprus conflict and related to the EU - Turkey policy.

For the European elections on 13 June 2004 Rothe was again placed as a candidate on the promising position 2 of the SPD list and re-elected to the Parliament. On January 16, 2007, she was elected at the forthcoming election of the Parliament Bureau as Vice-President of the European Parliament. With the choice she has made her role as deputy chairman of the SPD group.
