Meckenheim is a municipality in the district of Bad Durkheim in Rhineland- Palatinate. It belongs to the municipality Deidesheim.

Geographical location

The community lies on the edge of the wine road region and is part of the Rhine -Neckar.

History

The Frankish village Meckenheim is believed to have originated in the 5th century. In the year 768, a first donation from Meckenheim to the Lorsch Abbey was documented, followed more donations to other monasteries. Anno 991 fell some Meckenheimer goods to the Weißenburger Duke Otto. In the 12th century Aegidius church was built.

In 1287, Mecke home was purchased by Count Palatine Ludwig II; It was from then on to Electoral Palatinate. 1459/60 Mecke home was burnt down by the Leiningern ( Emich VII ). With the introduction of the Reformation in the Palatinate Meckenheim was Protestant. In 1585 Giles church was rebuilt.

After massive devastation in the Thirty Years' War Meckenheim was abandoned by its inhabitants in 1641. The Meckenheimer church fell in 1707 to the Catholics; 1747/48, the Protestant church was built. During the First Coalition War in the late 18th century Meckenheim suffered great damage. As a result of the decisions of the Congress of Vienna was Meckenheim 1816 together with the Palatinate to the Kingdom of Bavaria.

In 1824, the school and community center ( Hauptstr. 98) was built, 1872, the present Town Hall ( Hauptstr. 58). 1894, the agricultural purchasing and marketing cooperative and the Raiffeisen Bank were established, which were merged in 1938.
