Mecklenburg (Dano-Norwegian family)

Mecklenburg, Mechlenborg and Mikkel Borg is a living in Denmark and in Norway and originating from Flensburg patrician family. Among the members are governors, military and merchants.

Name and Coat of Arms

There are many spellings of the name handed down under which Mecklenburg, Mechlenborg and in what is now northern Norway Mikkel Borg which are most common.

The coat of arms can be described as follows: From a forest [ Three Trees ] an ongoing wild dog. Helmet characters is rampant, a wild dog. The coat of arms has natural color.

General History

As a young man came Oluf Jensen ( * 1487 in Flensburg ) to Haderslev. There he became a merchant, and soon he was very wealthy. He was married to Margrethe Meckelborch, sister of Henrick Meckelborch, mayor in Flensburg. Later Jensen himself was mayor in this city. Jensen took the name of his first wife, and was called hence Oluf Meckelburg. This name were his children.

After Oluf the Elder followed Oluf the Younger ( b. 1540), Oluf Meckel Petersburg son of his later marriage with Marina Oldendorph, daughter of Jacob Pedersen Oldendorph, mayor in Haderslev, and Elisabeth Hansdatter Holst Just like his father was Oluf Younger Kaufmann, - not in his native town, but in that of his father, Flensburg. Since he was one of the greatest merchants of the city. He acted with goods from the royal fief (Schleswig and Holstein ), and he had good trade relations with Norway. He was married to Margrethe Carsten Datter, and the paternal mother's side was from the Schleswig-Holstein landed gentry. Her parents were Carsten Rickertsen, mayor in Flensburg, and Marina Friis Arlewatt.

Her sons Jacob and Oluf Mechlenborg went to Norway, where they each Vogt of Vogt Nordmøre or Helgeland were. Her third son, Carsten Mechlenborg remained in Haderslev, where he became a merchant and mayor. Many of his children went to Eastern Norway.

Mecklenburg in Eastern Norway

Customs clerk Oluf Carstensen Mechlenburg had the sons Niels Mechlenburg, landlords, and Willum Mecklenburg, lord of Eiker. The descendants of the two brothers were married to members of noble families of Denmark and Norway, among others, with Werenskiold of Rømer, de Tonsberg, Huitfeldt, Haussmann and the Count von Wedel- Jarlsberg.

Mecklenburg in Western Norway

Jacob Olufsen Mechlenborg (around 1565-1619 ) Vogt of Nordmøre. His wife was Maren Mikkelsdatter, and they had three known sons: Oluf Jacobsen Mechlenborg, Vogt Nordmøre and publicans, Niels Jacobsen Mechlenborg and Johan Jacobsen Mechlenborg.

Mecklenburg in northern Norway

Jens Olufsen Mechlenborg (around 1566-1626 ) came in 1601 or 1602 to Trondheim in Norway. It is not known what he did during the first years. He probably worked for or together with merchants, with whom had had trade relations with his father and grandfather. Between 1606 and 1619 he was governor of North Helgeland.

His son Oluf Jensen Mechlenborg was governor of Lofoten and Vesterålen. Between 1640 and 1644 he was governor of Helgeland. In 1665 he lived at Großhofe Lurøy in Helgeland. He was married since 1629 with Adelus Christensdatter ( Schanche ), daughter of Mr. Christen Olufsen ( Schanche ), parish priest to Brønnøy.

Only the Son of Christen Olufsen Mechlenborg (around 1640 to 1710) is known, and he was residing at Lurøy. His daughter Eva Christensdatter Mechlenborg ( Um. 1680-1762 ), which took over Lurøy, was married to the shipowner Kristen Hansen Hestmannøy ( Hestmona ). Your children took the name Mechlenborg and thus founded the young line. Since they no longer occupied public office, they continued as merchants and shipowners.
