Medal for Fighters Against Fascism

The medal for fighters against fascism 1933-1945 was a national award of the GDR.

Foundation and award conditions

The medal was donated by the Council of Ministers of the German Democratic Republic on 22 February 1958. Awards were involved in the resistance struggle against Nazism, for example, former inmates in prisons, jails and concentration camps and political emigrants and members of the International Brigades. Also the action against fascism in the National Committee for a Free Germany was recognized, for example, Lieutenant General Arno von Lenski ( since 1940 an honorary member of the People's Court, later General of the NVA ).

The medal was awarded only once and only to individuals. For their ceremony, which was performed by the Chairman of the Council of Ministers, was a certificate. All carriers of the medal since 1964, received an annual allowance of 600 marks of honor.

Stylish look and manner

The silver plated coin with a diameter of 32 mm shows on their obverse the left when viewed from head -looking portraits of Rudolf Breitscheidstraße and Ernst Thalmann (front). Enclosed are these semi-circular of the above inscription: FIGHTERS AGAINST FASCISM. The reverse of the coin, however, shows the center the coat of arms of the GDR surrounded by the inscription: FORWARD AND DO NOT FORGET (top) and the year 1933. 1945 (below). Was driven medal at the upper left side of the chest at a 28 mm wide rectangular red related clasp that was then only 24 mm wide from 1959. In the tape, a 7.5 mm high black-red- golden beam was woven in a horizontal position. The accompanying interim clip was of the same nature.
